GPS & Mapping
My current GPS is an Etrex Legend. It is a monochrome display (not colour), and has a serial interface with a USB adaptor for our new laptop (no serial port).
Maps for the GPS
In my GPS, I use Tracks4Australia maps when travelling in Australia, and New Zealand Open GPS maps for NZ. To download the maps to the GPS from my PC I use Garmin Trip & Waypoint Manager.
Mapping Software
For mapping software on my Windows PC, I use OziExplorer.
I have now started using MacGPS Pro on a Mac for mapping and downloading tracks from my GPS. As MacGPS Pro doesn't support ECW format, I need to convert the map files to GeoTIFF format.
Update - MacGPS version 8 now supports ecw maps, and a few features that closes the gap with OziExplorer. More information once I have had a play with it.
The maps I use are Natmaps Raster 250K for Australia, and Fugawi 4M for the rest of the world.
Use
I use the GPS for checking where we are, recording and displaying favourite locations (using waypoints), and for recording our track to be later downloaded into OziExplorer. The Etrex is NOT a navigation GPS unit.
